Journalism Department Advising
2
Advising process
  • All new students should sign up for a group advising session on the JN advising board, 490 Phifer. After you’ve attended a group session, sign up to see your assigned adviser if you have more questions. Find your adviser on the bulletin board.
  • Students in JN 200 and JN 311 will be advised in group sessions during their classes and can see their assigned adviser after that session.
  • Sophomores, juniors and seniors who have completed 311 should sign up to see their individual advisers (see JN advising board outside Phifer 490 for assigned advisers).
3
Academic warning,
special requests
  • All (including freshmen) students with GPAs below 2.0 MUST see the department chair (Dr. Greer) for advising. Sign up on her sheet outside Phifer 490.
  • For all overrides and special requests, please fill out a Special Registration Request form (obtain a copy from your adviser or the journalism office, Phifer 490), have your adviser sign it, and bring it to the office.

Moving up to 300-level classes in journalism
  • You must have a 2.0 average to take any classes at the 300-level and above in the college.
  • If you don’t have the grades, you must see the department chair. Your registration will be blocked until you are advised.
9
Required core courses outside the major
  • Before you register for each semester, be sure to review the list of required classes outside of the major.
  • You must take EN 101 and 102, English composition. You are encouraged to take these classes as soon as possible.
  • Your English composition requirement also can be met with AP credits or EN 103, depending on your placement test.
10
Humanities and fine arts
  • You must take 12 hours in fine arts and humanities.
    • At least three in fine arts
    • At least six in literature (EN 205-EN 210, EN 249)
    • An additional three-hour fine arts or humanities class.
  • We recommend that journalism majors consider COM 123, public speaking, which fulfills this requirement.
11
Fine arts requirement
  • You must take a three-credit class in fine arts.
  • See suggested courses in your advising packets or on the JN advising Web site.
  • You may also take TCF 112 to fulfill the requirement (and it also will fulfill the optional class you take as a print journalism major, picking from JN, TCF, MC or APR).
12
Literature requirements
  • You must take two three-credit classes in English-language literature.
  • Choose from:
    • American literature, EN 209 and EN 210;
    • British literature, EN 205 and 206; or
    • world literature, EN 207 and 208
    • African American literature, EN 249
  • You do not have to take both classes in the same sequence as a journalism major; TCF and APR majors do.
13
Science and mathematics
  • You must take two, four-credit natural science classes with labs; You do not have to take two classes in the same science.
  • You must take one three-credit mathematics class, MATH 110 or above.
  • If you take MA 005 or 100 first, you still have to take MATH 110 or above to fulfill the core math requirement.
  • If you are going to minor in business or another minor that requires math skills, you should take MATH 112 instead of MATH 110.
14
History and social sciences

    • HY 101 and 102, Western civilization
    • HY 203 and 204, American history.

  • Students who took two years of a foreign language in high school may be eligible to take only one class, a 103 class in that language. Example: FR 103.
  • Students who take computer science must begin with CS 102, a non-core class. They’ll take two more three-hour classes to fulfill the core requirement, CS 202 first, then usually either CS 205 or CS 285, the most used classes.
16
Writing requirements
  • You will fulfill the writing course requirements when you take most journalism classes.
  • You satisfy this requirement when you take journalism writing classes: JN 311, 312, 315. These must be completed at UA.
17
Special requirements
  • You will take 18 credits (six classes) at the 300 or 400 level outside journalism or APR/TCF/MC.
  • You may take some of these classes in your minor, but because most minors require only six to nine hours at the 300-400 level, you likely will need to take other upper-division electives.

21
Your minor
  • A minor or second major is required; See a list of suggested minors on the JN advising Web site.
  • Declare your minor in that department and talk with an advisor to get a list of approved courses.
  • The number of credits for a minor vary from 18 to 27 credits.
  • If you earn a minor in business, you still have to take 65 credits in A&S, Comm Studies or other classes with a core curriculum designation.
22
Minor in another C&IS area?
  • You may not earn a minor in APR, TCF, or MC, but you may earn a minor in information science or communication studies (speech).
23
General electives
  • Once you know you’re on track to have taken the required core classes and are well on your way taking required classes in your major and minor, you may register in other classes that interest you.
  • Keep in mind the 300+ level special requirement. (You need 18 hours)
24
Internships

  • You can also work at other internships for no credit, while in school or during the summers.
25
Degree audit
  • Once students have completed 85 hours, they should meet with the college’s registrar, Mary Ann Bradley. Phone 348-8595. E-mail: mbradley@ua.edu
  • She’ll check to make sure they have taken the required classes and to make sure that they are on track to take all required classes by the time you expect to graduate.
