Spectrum Meeting:

July 8, 2007

Ferg. 307

Purpose of today’s meeting is to catch-up; look at where we are going where we are at.

1st Safezone meeting this week, Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 9am.

Please come to the practice-run on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 3pm.

Everything has been completed and ready to go.

Rachel, Suzy, Chris Grant, and Sterling will consist of the first student panel. Please keep in mind that we still need more students for future trainings in order to mix it up and keep things fresh. It would be nice to have a pool of students to pull from.

Send a copy of your school schedule to Josh for future SafeZone training.

Safezone training has been updated to include more about transgender students and LGBTQ students of color.

Spectrum library will be moved from Graves to Josh’s office for the meantime. We will see if Gorgas is a possibility as a permanent location to house the resources.

The complete history of the LGBTQ group archive (seven boxes of archives) at UA is in the process of being moved to Hull. It will be nice to know that we actually existed at the University. Need to find out how much in shipping cost to send them from California to UA.

The LGBTQ faculty group’s official name is Capstone Alliance. Lauren and Jenna are the two students to represent Spectrum at the Capstone Alliance meetings.

Outreach for grad students-Trey has been meeting with Rosiland. We are officially part of the Graduate Student Orientation on August 18, 2007.. We will have a table for information about Spectrum for incoming Grad students. We need two people for the luncheon at 12pm to answer questions from the graduate students. It would be nice to have a grad or  “more mature” students to represent Spectrum at this function.

We need to have a draft or finish copy of what we are going to be handing out for the Week of Welcome, Get on Board day, and the Graduate Orientation. –some sort of calendar of activities, statement of purpose, mission, contact info, website address, facebook, myspace info. Please send your contact info to Taylor if you would like to be listed on the hand-outs as a contact.

Finally, next social event will be 7:30p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2007 MOVIE NIGHT at Josh’s house, bring stuff (food, drinks, fun things)!!! Send movie suggestions to Josh through Facebook, more details to come!!

Update: Members of Spectrum visited a Sexuality class to field questions about LGBT from students—awesome experience for the group. Class of ten had lots of questions for the group.

The Provost of University of Tennessee had mentioned that they do not want to be at the end of the line of not including a statement regarding sexuality in their anti-discrimination policy. The provost did not want to be associated with other schools that did not have such a policy. UA was first on that list of schools not to be associated with.

Possible own pride week in October at the University?? Plan events, have a parade. Educate people about our history.

Maybe later (after August) we should start talking about creating a permanent space at UA for the LGBTQ community; a safe place to meet. We need to get the dialogue started and make it happen.  We should try to find “unexpected” places for us to ask for space.   We need to talk about this some more.

General consensus from the group about being excited of where we are going and our purposes being discussed and planned at the summer meetings.
