Elliot Jones Scholarship for GLBT Activism

What is this Scholarship: The official name of the scholarship is the Elliott Jackson Jones Memorial Scholarship for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Activism. Elliott was the first president and founding member of the UA GLBTA, now the Queer Straight Alliance. Sadly, Elliot passed away in the summer of 1999, and the selection committee wanted to honor his memory by naming the scholarship after him. The scholarship is provided for individuals whom continuously find new ways to support the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender on the Alabama campus.

Majors: Open to all

Amount: $ 1,000 (annually)

Requirements: Full-time student in good academic standing with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; recipient must demonstrate outstanding commitment to and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students at The University of Alabama; recipient may be an undergraduate or graduate student.

Previous Recipients:

Sara Strong (2003): A senior in social work, Sara is a founder of the Queer Women on Campus. She also played a part in the Safe Zone Program success on campus, which trains faculty, staff, and students of the campus so they may provide assistance to students wanting assistance and guidance with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues.
