MEANING OF PRELIMINARY ICHNOTAXON

***WARNING: THESE INTERPRETATIONS ARE NOT DEFINITIVE. MOST WILL BE REVISED AT SOME POINT!****

The preliminary ichnotaxon is more specific than the class but is still general in the table since the trackways are still being studied by professional ichnologists at this time. For UCM numbers < 542, this column has input from professional ichnologists from the Track Meet summary sheets compiled by Prescott, but for many of the other trackways no such interpretation is available. The following categories were defined by Buta for descriptive purposes only. They are not definitive and were set up only to allow a preliminary inventory of the database. Some of this is guided from the Track Meet summaries.

The symbols :,? used in this column represent different degrees of uncertainty, with ? being a guess.

Table 1: Ichnotaxon Codes
Code Meaning

CC Cincosaurus cobbi, the most common vertebrate at the site
CC - T C. cobbi with tail-dragging mark
CC - MP C. cobbi with manus/pes prints visible (subject to interpretation)
CC - MPT same as CC - MP with tail-dragging mark
CC - medium C. cobbi tracks of larger than average size, typically a few cm
CC - large the largest C. cobbi tracks, more often than not single or partial
UN Undichna, thought to be a fish fin trace
K1 Kouphichnium (horseshoe crab) characterized by two broad bands of complex impressions, very distinctive and easily recognized
K2 also Kouphichnium; simplest has two toe prints on either side of a tail-dragging mark. Easily recognized but often more complex. Sometimes tail mark dips (called K2 - dip in file)
K3 Kouphichnium where the "footprints" seem to be curved arches on either side of tail-dragging mark. Easily recognized but sometimes it was difficult to decide on whether a trackway was K2 or K3. Some trackways may be intermediate between these classes.
K6 this is the "jumper" category of Kouphichnium noted by Prescott. It may represent burrowing/resurfacing horseshoe crabs (according to Andy?). The class is easily recognized.
K7 Kouphichnium category that includes tracks that involve the obvious "y-shape". Either the y's are parallel or they may be at various angles. The class is easily recognized.
AB Arborichnus; these are horseshoe crab resting traces. There were hundreds of these at UCM, but very few made it into the photographic database.
K5 small, very light traces characterized by a very thin trail-dragging mark flanked on each side by a flurry of light spots, almost randomly distributed. My first impression is that these are due to horseshoe crabs, but this is uncertain.
AR "arthropod" This category includes small, often very well-defined trackways. Some could be horseshoe crabs, others probably are something else. I was uncertain about how to interpret many of them.
AS "asymmetric" - this category involves an asymmetric trackway of unknown nature (to me at least). There is a thin tail-dragging mark flanked on each side by a flurry of small traces, extending more on one side than the other
WB worm burrows
DP diplichnites (millipedes). Some ARs could be this, some labeled as such may not.
KD a small, light invertebrate trace with a dashed tail-dragging mark.
