The project consists of three weeks
of in-home visits, observation, assessment, and, most importantly support
with the caregiver and care recipient. A diagram of the study design is available.
Initial Telephone Screen (Week 1): Potential participants will be identified
by the hospice coordinators, and their information will be passed on to the
project staff. Research assistants will telephone the dyads within 48 hours
of admission to hospice to discuss the project and to screen for age, diagnosis,
presence of a non-paid personal caregiver, and residence within a 60 mile
radius of Birmingham/Tuscaloosa. If the caregiver agrees, an appointment for
an in-home interview will be made to gather informed consent, discuss the
project, and gather baseline information.
