Class Format
The class will be lecture/discussion. Each Tuesday class will focus on the material in the text. You read the chapters before the class begins. Each Thursday will begin with an opportunity for students to ask questions related to the assigned readings, issues of interest to the student, or items of interest from the news. Lecture material will tend to be enrichment materials rather than repetition of information in the text. Please note that the topics in the weekly outline refer to enrichment materials that will be discussed on Thursdays.
The Exams
Each exam will be composed of twenty fill in the blank items
drawn from the text and from the lecture.
The Term Paper
A substantial research paper is required (minimum 5,000 words about 20 pages). The paper will focus on one aspect of community relations and will have the following sections:
Introduction 1-2 pages
Description of a community relations program or issue 5-10 pages
Theoretical/philosophical rational for program or basis for the issue 3-5 pages
Reasons for adopting the program or pros on the issue 5-10 pages
Reasons for not adopting the program or cons 5-10 pages
Ways the program could be improved or the issue resolved or clarified 2-4 pages
Summary 1-2 pages
The paper grade will be based on the quality of your writing. Correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are expected and reflect minimum standards not grading. Readability, organization, coverage of the literature, understanding of the issues, and effectiveness of any arguments that you choose to advance will determine your grade. Any paper that does not follow the above format with appropriate headings in the paper will receive a grade of 70 or less. At least one half of your reference citations must come from refereed sources.
