The Rural Alabama Area Health Education Center was established by the Rural Alabama Health Alliance to improve access to quality healthcare, healthcare education and health resources for community populations. Its goals are to:

(1) facilitate education for primary care medical residents, undergraduate medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, social workers, pharmacists, nurses and allied health professionals; (2) coordinate training of interdisciplinary teams from these disciplines; (3) facilitate continuing education of practicing health professionals and providers through workshops, CME, and learning resource centers. (4) provide the means for healthcare career exploration by K-12 students using Rural Health Scholars, Rural Medical Scholars and local physician mentors in recruitment workshops and presentations, with a particular emphasis on minority and disadvantaged students; (5) increase the number of minority and disadvantaged students who enter health professions careers through targeted recruitment and training; (6) use internet resources, computer equipment, and telecommunication distance learning activities to extend educational opportunities.
