| The Rural Health Scholars Program is conducted by the UA College of
Community Health Sciences, a branch of the University of Alabama School of
Medicine. Rural Health Scholars live on the UA campus during a 5-week
summer program prior to their senior year. Chosen based on academic
achievement and interest in rural health care, these outstanding high
school juniors from rural areas take two courses for college credit
(English and Chemistry) and participate in field trips and lectures
related to rural health careers.

| RHSP Overview
The Rural Health Scholars program was initiated in 1993 by John Wheat, MD, a faculty member at the UA College of Community Health Sciences and the University of Alabama School of Medicine, UA Chemistry Professor Dr. Robert Garner, and Cynthia Moore, now the program’s director. In the past seven years (1993-2000), over 200 Rural Health Scholars have attended the program. (21% are African-Americans, and 66% females). These scholars represent 45 rural Alabama counties. A list of our Rural Health Scholars is available here (indexed by county). |

Funding is provided largely by the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board, with supplements from small hospitals, MASA (Medical Association, State of Alabama), the Alabama Chapter-American Academy of Family Physicians, and The University of Alabama. Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE), the Rural Alabama Health Alliance (RAHA), and Russell S. Lee Floor and Tile in Tuscaloosa sponsor portions of the program.
