Sarah Marshall: Teaching: Design I

Design I is open to non-majors and is a required course for art and interior design students. The course deals with the manipulation of two-dimensional space, including elements such as line, value, texture, and shape, and organizational principles such as rhythm, composition, weight, and concentration. Students respond to simple visual problems and practice basic skills such as: accurate measuring, cutting, and adhesion; inking with brush and pen; creating grey values with black and white gouache. The assignments encourage students to work from general to specific and to generate many initial solutions, which are progressively refined. All assignments fit into 8 1/2 x 11 sheet protectors and the final portfolio is submitted in a ring binder, leaving the student with a detailed sourcebook of design related vocabulary and sample images.
