IntroPsych News provides periodic announcements, course updates, and additional teaching resources for introductory psychology instructors at the University of Alabama.
1. Student Opinions of Instruction (SOI): Students may complete an evaluation of your course during the interval of November 26-December 9. The link is on myBama. I've had higher response rates and fewer questions by using a statement such as the following:
The UA course-instructor evaluation (called the Student Opinions of Instruction-SOI) will be available on myBama beginning November 26. This form is used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructors and is reviewed by the Psychology Department Chair, the A&S Dean, and me.
The link to the evaluation can be found under the student tab on myBama. On the page is a box that reads Your Opinions Matter (It has an image of a computer mouse on it). Click the mouse and then you will sign in using your myBama logon/password. You will then be able to click on our course number to complete the survey. At the end of the survey, you are given the opportunity to write comments about the course and my teaching. Your opinions are important to me and I urge you to complete the ratings and supply comments.
Once you have completed and submitted the survey you will see the course list again and a status note (e.g., "PY 105-900: Submitted"). I suggest sending me a screenshot or other image of the status note. To receive credit, you must complete the evaluation and get the verification to me before December 9.
2. AsapSCIENCE: Here's a collection of 2-3 minute, catchy explanations on You Tube. Many are related to psychology, such as Why do we blush?, The Science of Procrastination, and The Power of Naps.
3. UA final exam policies:
- Final exams are administered according to the tentative exam schedule published at www.myBama.ua.edu . Students should consult the final exam schedule before making plans to leave the campus at the end of the semester. Students may petition to reschedule exams if the following circumstances occur:
- A student has 3 or more exams schedule on the same day.
- A student has 2 exams scheduled at the same time.
- Students desiring to reschedule final exams due to three or more exams on one day or two exams scheduled at the same time must submit to their professor(s) documentation of their schedule. Priorities for rescheduling exam times are as follows:
- Exams for lower level classes have priority. For example, a 100-level course has higher priority than a 200-level course. The student should petition the 200-level course instructor for rescheduling.
- Exams for individual courses have higher priority than departmental exams regardless of level. The student with a conflict should petition the instructor of the course with the departmental exam for rescheduling. The exam is normally rescheduled for the time assigned to the individual course in the published examination schedule.
- For 7:00 - 9:30 PM exam conflicts, the daytime course has higher priority than the 6:00 PM or later course. The student should petition the instructor of the evening course for rescheduling.
4. Last day to post course grades: December 18.

6. Checklist for academic misconduct cases. Hopefully you won't need this, but here is a coversheet that lists all information to be submitted to A & S Dean's Office for cases of suspected academic misconduct.

8. Classroom incivility: Student perceptions. How do students see actions in addressing impolite or disruptive behavior. See the results of this survey from the October 2012 issue of Teaching of Psychology.
