As you may already know, SPSS, Inc. has purchased BMDP Statistical Software, Inc. It appears that SPSS does not intend to update BMDP and that BMDP by itself is now basically a dead product. For this reason, the University does not plan to purchase BMDP for bama.ua.edu. The users we have talked to have indicated that it is possible for them to move to another statistics package. This is a very expensive piece of software for a relatively small number of users.
SPSS currently plans to incorporate BMDP's functionality into Systat, another product they acquired. In the current Systat release, BMDP for DOS can be accessed from within the Systat program. Also, Systat can read BMDP data sets. We were told by SPSS that this includes BMDP for the IBM mainframe, but we do not know if this is correct. SPSS plans to incorporate BMDP functionality into future versions of Systat.
If you would like more news regarding SPSS and BMDP, you can go to the SPSS, Inc. web site at http://www.spss.com/ and use their search engine. Some interesting pages are:

Information about BMDP Y2K compliance can be found on the SPSS Year 2000 Web Site. In the table listing Year 2000 status for various SPSS products, BMDP Classic 7.0 for DOS is listed as "Not enabled", or not completely compliant. Older versions of BMDP and versions on other platforms are not listed, which means that SPSS does not intend to test them for Year 2000 compliance. More information on BMDP's Y2K status is available.
