Using the latest computerized design systems, students create original designs, repeats, colorways and coordinates targeting specific markets. Emphasis is on the creative use of advanced software, awareness of industry trends, and the development of an original portfolio of digitally produced designs.
3 credit hours
Utilize the steps of the design process to create textile design prints for the apparel or home furnishings industries
Apply the elements and principles of design to create original textile design prints using two-dimensional design fundamentals for the apparel or home furnishings industries
Identify and apply motifs, color palettes, design repeat techniques & layout strategies for designing original textile prints for the apparel or home furnishings industries
Demonstrate proficiency using industry standard software for designing textile prints for the apparel or home furnishings industries
Create original textile design print collections based on a specific design brief for the apparel or home furnishings industries
Develop a strong individual identity within all design & project work
Present projects in an industry-standard layout and design format
At the end of this course, the student will have consistently demonstrated the ability to create original textile design prints and collections, while answering specific design briefs, using industry standard software presented, on-line and in print, in a professional portfolio format for either the apparel or home furnishings industry.

Regular class attendance is required. It is important to have your work in-progress checked by the instructor. It will be necessary to work on your projects outside of the scheduled class time. The computer lab located in Adams will be open for your convenience. Check the computer lab schedule for days/times.
Students with disabilities need to register with the Office of Disability Services, 348-4285. After initial arrangements are made with that office, you are invited to schedule an appointment with me during my office hours to discuss accommodations and other needs you may have.
This is a skills-based course in which sequential information + skills are learned and used.
Unlike a lecture-based course, missing a class or not being on time can have serious consequences in terms of the student being able to fully master the required skills for success in this course.
Students are required to attend ALL classes.
Be on time. Class will begin on time each day. Students who enter the classroom after class has commenced will be considered tardy. With only one classroom entrance, and a full classroom, late arrivals will cause disruptions. Please plan to be punctual.
Be present. There are no free absences in this course. Please read the foregoing sentence again. You may miss class only for good cause. If you have any questions about these course requirements, please feel free to inquire. Please do not assume to your detriment.
TWO ABSENCES are allowed in this course [there are NO excused absences].
In the case of a THIRD ABSENCE, the student's final grade for the project in which it occurred will be reduced 1/2 letter grade.
In the case of a Fourth ABSENCE, the student's final grade for the project in which it occurred will be reduced 1 full letter grade.
This course policy is NOT negotiable and will be strictly enforced.
TWO late arrivals will be counted as ONE ABSENCE. This course policy is NOT negotiable and will be strictly enforced. If late, the student is responsible for notifying the instructor only at the end of that class or the student will be recorded as absent.
If absent, you are responsible for acquiring all materials (information, notes, etc.) missed BEFORE returning to the next class. It is recommended that you create an arrangement with another student to accomplish this end.
Assignments turned in after the due DATE & TIME will NOT be accepted. This course policy is NOT negotiable and will be strictly enforced.
All acts of dishonesty in any work constitute academic misconduct. The Code of Academic Misconduct Disciplinary Procedures will be followed in the event that academic misconduct occurs. Students should refer to the Student Affairs Handbook, which can be obtained from the Student Life Office in the Ferguson Center.
The policy of The University of Alabama is to administer final examinations during the period designated as final exam week. The policy of The University of Alabama is not to allow the early administration of final exams. This policy will be enforced.
No cell phones - turn them off before entering the classroom and put them out of site.
In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar; sirens activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.
