COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Jazz Standards Combo is a performance group for the advanced jazz improviser. This group explores the repertoire for the small group or"combo," with emphasis being placed on the portion of the jazz repertoire known as the "Jazz Standards" and other more difficult repertoire. This ensemble maintains a demanding performance schedule and it is expected of all members to perform at each concert and run-out as assigned.

COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

To increase the student's skills in sight reading, improvising, theory, ensemble playing, stylistic concepts, etc. All combo assignments are made based on the students level of proficiency, specifically the ability to improvise. The Jazz Standards Combo is an outgrowth of this group and is also responsible for performing "What Is Jazz?" for the local elementary schools.

PROCEDURES:

The following is expected of ALL members of the ensemble:
All doubles/accessories are required and expected of all musicians
    Mutes: harmon, straight, cup

    Electric bass
    PENCILS

FORMAT:

Once combo assignments are made, the rehearsal schedule will be set. Each combo will rehearse one hour twice a week. All tunes will be memorized for rehearsal and performance. It is strongly recommended that soloists utilize the Improvisation Lab for additional work on their respective solos.

GRADING PROCEDURES & POLICIES:

Grading will be based on the student's preparation, musicality, attitude, attendance, and overall ability to work within the structure of the ensemble.

POLICIES:

he overall policy of the course is to be prepared for all rehearsals. The rehearsals are for ensemble work, not individualized practice. Always take your music with you for personal practice! REHEARSALS WILL ALWAYS START ON TIME.

UA Severe Weather Guidelines (http://uanews.ua.edu/severeweather.htm)

The guiding principle at The University of Alabama is to promote the personal safety of our students, faculty and staff during severe weather events. It is impossible to develop policies which anticipate every weather-related emergency. These guidelines are intended to provide additional assistance for responding to severe weather on campus.

In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar; sirens activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.

PERSONAL CONDUCT:

It is hoped that students participating in this course will be challenged to achieve their full potential. At the same time, we are committed to providing a non-threatening learning environment. No conduct, which may be regarded as harassing as defined in the University of Alabama's stated policy will be tolerated.

To request disability accommodations, please contact Disabilities Services (348-4285). After initial arrangements are made with that office, contact the instructor.
