Grading Method
All
grades for PH 101 will be available on the WebAssign web site, so
students can access them using the same password that they use for
submitting homework. We will periodically upload quiz, in-class
lab or worksheet, and midterm exam grades to WebAssign -- this will be
announced in class, or you can check the main web site to see when a
new batch has been uploaded. After the final exam, an email
will be sent out when grades are available.
Grades are computed by first averaging all the assignments in each
category: quizzes, in-class, midterm, homework, and final exam.
Each item is graded on a 0-100 scale, which is converted to a letter
grade on a linear scale. The scale is specified by giving the
numerical grades for the lowest passing grade (D-) and the lowest
A-. For the standard scale, these numbers would be 60 and
90. All other cutoffs
can be obtained by interpolation.
As of 3/10/06, the scales (lowest D-,
lowest A-) are:
Homework: 50 and 90 (i.e., slightly more generous than standard,
on the low end)
Quizzes: 45 and 90
In-class: 52 and 90
Midterm: 1st: 30 and 70; 2nd: 27.8 and 65.3
Averaging these with the current weights (11,7,5,20) gives overall
D-=40.1, A-=79.6.
Note that the lowest 2 quizzes
and the lowest 2 in-class assignments are dropped (at the end of the
semester).
For the midterm grades (as of 2/20 or 3/10), this is prorated: 1 quiz
and 1 in-class
assignment have been dropped.
For future assignments, the scales may
be different, depending on the
difficulty.
