Pollock, John C., and Spiro G. Yulis. "Nationwide Newspaper Coverage of Physician-Assisted Suicide: A Community Structure Approach." Journal of Health Communication 9, no. 4 (2004): 281-307.
Pollock and Yulis use community variables to explain news content, linking content data to data on community demographics, health care access, and media access (e.g., the number of radio stations). Pollock and Yuris report that the percentage of community residents more than 75 years of age is a significant predictor of unfavorable newspaper coverage of physician-assisted suicide. Favorable coverage is found in communities in which a relatively high percentage of the population enjoys access to health care and to media. Pollock and Yulis disucss the theoretical basis for their community structure approach to content analysis. Instead of investigating the impact of media on society, they ask: "What is the impact of society on media?" (p. 282).
