Wood, Dan B., Chris T. Owens, and Brandy M. Durham. "Presidential Rhetoric and the Economy." Journal of Politics 67, no. 3 (2005): 627-645.

Using content analysis and public opinion data, Wood, Owens, and Durham link the relative optimism of presidential remarks on the economy to public confidence in the economy: "Controlling for current and past economic performance, we use vector autoregression to show that presidential remarks significantly affect people's perceptions of the economic news, as well as their confidence about current and future economic conditions" (p. 627).
