Dupagne, Michael, Tina Carroll, and Kristen Campbell. "Trends in Content- Analytic Research Practices in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, 1956-2001." Feedback 46, no. 5 (2005): 4-12.

Dupagne et al. report that content analysis has become increasingly common in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media (JBEM). In the 1990s, more than 25 percent of JBEM research articles employed content analysis. Over four decades the content analyses in JBEM became steadily more sophisticated and rigorous in terms of sampling procedures, reliability assessment, and statistical analysis. However, the use of nonprobability sampling remained common throughout the decades. In the 1990s, more than 50 percent of content analyses relied on nonprobability sampling.
